6 Resurrected Guitar Heroes
These OG axe-slingers dropped albums that rocked hard and fast.
by Jim Kaz

showUSloc=(checkLocale('uk')checkLocale('au'));document.writeln(showUSloc ? 'US, ' : '');
January 27, 2009 - This past year was quite the fruitful one in the re-emergence of yesterday's guitar masters. While many fans of the axe will continue to tout Jimi Hendrix as the greatest rock player ever, the guitar went through a stirring metamorphosis during the '80s that has had a profound influence on many of today's premier players (Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom and Avenged Sevenfold six-string slayer Synyster Gates quickly come to mind). At the time, it was practically a prerequisite for every band to have its own superstar six-stringer in the ranks. And the further you delve into the history of rock-guitar heroism, it's pretty easy to see why. Many of the guitarists that came up during the 1980s were weaned on people like Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton; serious players that at times, overshadowed their respective bands. Everything got cranked up about a thousand notches with the introduction of Eddie Van Halen a few years later. Van Halen single-handedly revolutionized the guitar—in all aspects of tone, to how it was played and even constructed. Spawning hordes of feverish finger-tapping disciples, the man added a myriad of possibilities to the equation. With other heavies like Randy Rhodes, Michael Schenker, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, George Lynch, Paul Gilbert, Zakk Wylde and Joe Satriani in the mix, the guitar enjoyed a renaissance that was unprecedented. A few of such axe-masters put out new albums this past year and reminded us of why they were (and still are) greats of the guitar.

7 virtues of Avenged Sevenfold

The first thing that hits you square in the jaw about Avenged Sevenfold is the name, its specificity.

Sure, they could've called themselves Smoted Two or Three Times but that wouldn't tell the full story of retribution and revenge that Avenged Sevenfold handily implies.

And therein lies this band's earliest claim to greatness.

Another band looked at the Book of Genesis and named their band . . . Genesis. "Blah!," said M. Shadows and company, "Later for that!"

Perusing the bit about the Lord promising "vengeance seven times over" to anyone daring to harm a hair on Cain's head, he proclaimed, "We are Avenged Sevenfold!"

You almost wish they were keeping a tally of every music business executive that stood in their way from day one, waiting for the day when payback would be imminent, like Elvis Costello supposedly did early in his career before he became everybody's pal.

In truth, the five that make up Sevenfold were embraced almost immediately by the industry and had a deal before they were even on the other side of teendom.

And yet there are plenty of people who curse the name Avenged Sevenfold and wish them nothing but hard luck and misfortune for having called all the shots in their meteoric career, which was recently capped with the ultimate success-as-revenge item, a double CD/DVD package: the Diamonds in the Rough CD (a cupboard clearing of rare recordings and b-sides) and the Live at the LCB DVD (a live concert in Long Beach, California).

That's just the latest in trendsetting moves by the band that dared to dare, which brings us to the seven ways in which Avenged Sevenfold distanced their wares from the pack.

I. Their cool individual names!

Never underestimate the power of choosing a cool band member name for yourself. Marilyn Manson did it but you can immediately see the formulaic thought process behind naming yourself after a hot chick and a mass murderer, like Madonna Wayne Gacy or Daisy Berkowitz did. It takes real free spirit to come up with handles like M. Shadows, Zacky Vengeance, The Rev, Synyster Gates and Johnny Christ and keep a straight face when registering in at hotel front desks. Even some past Avenged members couldn't work ludicrous name angle very well. Which is why Justin Meacham and Matt Wendt are in a Where Are they Now file with non-conformist Pete Best, who you'll recall missed out on worldwide fame with the Beatles simply because he refused to comb his hair vertically.

2. Their ambivalence to spelling correctly!

Maybe this was just to cheese off their English teachers but for Avenged Sevenfold, two of the three Rs, Readin' and Ritin' got the short shrift on the band's second album Waking the Fallen. Like hastily scribbled suicide notes, three songs beginning with the letter R are grossly misspelled- Reverand (sic), Reverance (sic), and Remenissions (siccer). Not since the Zombies purposely misspelled Odessey (sic) and Oracle to combat a brainy image and Slade got typographers to print backward letters on their misspelled titles has such laissez faire existed in the spelling department.

3. They dare to court schizophrenia!

Lots of bands go from sotto voce to growl at the drop of a time signature and Avenged Sevenfold are no exception. Where Avenged deviates from their contemporaries is their willingness to not only run the gamut of extreme voices but also to contradict everything they've just said in the previous song. Refer back to Waking the Fallen again. It is no coincidence that I Won't See You Tonight Part 1, a majestic yet determined statement of avoidance that clocks in at almost nine minutes, is followed by I Won't See You Tonight Part 2, an angry plea for said person to "Come back to me, this is inconceivable," covering twice the beats in half the time. In metal, this about face hardly registers a blip but in the outside world, such two-faced dementia is usually rewarded with a room made of rubber.

4. They dare to court country

Not only is their Dear God far less blasphemous than the song of the same name by Brit-poppers XTC, but also it's got pedal steel like Kenney Chesney and a melody like Peter Frampton's Baby I Love Your Way. Can you say double-crossover?

5. They dare to court new fans

With the release of their first major-label album, City of Evil on Warner Brothers, they totally messed with their trademark screaming sound, worked up some emo-friendly melodies and upped the harmonized guitars to get that "Iron Maiden shoves Brian May through a Cuisinart" sound. And then they introduced the aforementioned pedal steel and strings on their second, self-titled WB release. Two hundred fifty-one out of 895 itune listeners found this disgruntled review helpful: "Ewww! Why? If you're a fan of their older work, don't buy this . . . it will only make you angry." Maybe he should've qualified that with "It'll only make you as angry as a band called Avenged Sevenfold making radio-friendly music can make you angry."

6. They dare to cross-promote

In 2007, they performed Scream on the Spike Scream Awards. This is huge. Just ask anyone who's ever written a song called Emmy, Oscar or Tony how far they ever got with their award show cross-promotional endeavors. If only they could've performed Afterlife on Crossing Over with John Edward.

They also used You Tube as a promotional tool by posting "making of the album" cartoons for their eponymous 2007 album as well as fake interviews with Wolfie, the band's studio mascot, a stuffed wolf that sounds suspiciously like Triumph the Insult Dog.

7. They laugh at critical acclaim

How? By naming a song Critical Acclaim so even after Rolling Stone only gives their last studio album two stars, speed readers will see those two words and blur their own conclusions. That's chutzpah sevenfold!

Hola chavos.

In the December 2008 issue of Guitar World and Revolver magazine 'Rebel Meets Rebel 2008' special issue, you can find two Metallica interviews. One is between James Hetfield and Guitar World, the other one is between M. Shadows, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich (Metallica). The interesting part is that in both of the interviews, James & Lars gave credits to young bands such as Bullet For My Valentine, Trivium, DragonForce and Avenged Sevenfold for being their musical inspiration.

Guitar World Interview
GW : You’ve talked a bit about Diamond Head and the music that inspired you when you were first starting out, but is there somebody that you’ve listened to in the past 10 years, whether it’s a new or old artist, that you appreciate on a guitar-playing level?
Hetfield: [Long pause] There are certain guys who obviously inspired me to play guitar. I love certain bands. Ted Nugent and Aerosmith had some riffs, but it was more the Judas Priest and the AC/DCs that got to me because the rhythm guitar was such an important part of their sound. I’d listen to somebody like Malcolm Young and think, This dude’s driving the train right now. And that would be exciting. These days, there’s been such an amazing resurgence in guitar talent – and not just guitar but drums, keyboards, singing…It’s unbelievable.

GW: Yeah, that Pro Tools guy is pretty good!
Hetfield: [laughs] Yeah. Mr.Tools? Yeah. He’s one helluva a producer! I hear what you’re saying, but I think there’s more to it. I think there are guys sitting in their bedrooms trying to imitate stuffs that has been Pro Tooled to death, and they’re playing it naturally. Pro Tools is creating new monsters. It’s amazing how some of these guitar players are. It reminds me a lot of, say, when the Eighties happened and all of these amazing virtuoso guitar players like Yngwie Malmsteen were emerging, and there were plenty of bands that had amazing rhythm sections.

GW: Are you talking about bands like Bullet For My Valentine and Avenged Sevenfold? Their arrangements are so big and complex that they are almost writing heavy metal symphonies.
Hetfield: Right, right. You can probably put DragonForce in there. Bands that have two unbelievable guitar players and they’re playing all their parts perfectly in concert. And the drummer is keeping right up with them. There are drummers around these days that blow me away. And some stuffs is very orchestral. It’s very dramatic and epic sounding. So a lot of that stuff is pretty inspiring.

M.Shadows Interview
Shadows: Music has changed a lot since you began, and I’m sure your influences have changed, as well. What drives you to continue playing, and what are your current influences in music and in life in general?
Ulrich: Honestly, it’s you guys. Seriously! You guys put out music that inspires us, and I appreciate all the love we get from all of you guys, from Trivium, from Bullet for My Valentine – everybody. That’s what inspires us – hearing people re-interpret what we’ve done in the same way that we re-interpreted Black Sabbath and everything through that whole lineage. You guys spit stuff back in our face, and it keeps us on our toes and fresh. We’re all just music fans, and the reason we do what we do is because we love music. We’re always listening to new stuffs and trying to keep our finger on the pulse to the best of our abilities. And I’d say just being in musical environment that continues to reinvent itself and be stimulating is what inspires us. We’ve been doing it so long. There’s so many ups and downs and so many dynamics in the relationships. And I think what’s really inspiring us right now is that we’re all getting along, we’re all really having fun. As you can see, there’s no psychiatrists around – there’s not all this bullshit going on. Phil said the whole time that all the work we were doing three or four years ago was going to pay off on the next record, not on St.Anger. And it’s really true – every day going into the studio to write and seeing these guys, it’s fun again. It’s not like, Now I’ve gotta go battle James Hetfield all day, you know what I mean? And it’s showing and everything – that way we play onstage and just the whole vibe.
Hetfield: Yeah, for sure. The fact that we don’t know our potential, and we’re still striving for that ultimate thing – “never satisfied” is both a curse and a blessing, you know? The next song you write is always going to be the best of your career. And bands like yourself are getting us to step up again and getting us to remember the roots where we came from. Also, hooking up with a Rick Rubin, another entity. It’s like, Imagine if ‘Tallica did a record with Rick Rubin? Whoa, what would that be like? There’s a lot of untapped stuffs, and we don’t know where we can go until we try. Also, when you evolve in life, you listen to music differently than when you were younger. Songs from way back take on a whole new meaning and inspire you in a new way – especially lyrically.

Once again a circle of musical inspiration and influence took place in the great world of music, because we all know that Avenged Sevenfold is a big fan of Metallica. And when Metallica said that they were inspired and influenced by Avenged Sevenfold, the world is just perfect!

What The Hell Happened To... 01.12.09: Avenged Sevenfold - City Of Evil
Posted by Dan Marsicano

This week, Dan Marsicano takes a trip to the City Of Evil and Order of Ennead is this edition's band you should be listening to!

The Introduction

Today is another glorious Monday because I have for all you 411 readers a brand spanking new edition of What The Hell Happened To… As always, I'm your host, Dan Marsicano, and I appreciate your eyes and possibly ears for the next 10-60 seconds (depending on how far you actually read into the column).

I recently got a gig with the Heavy Metal section of About.com and am also currently still writing at Metal Underground (under the alias heavytothebone2) and SMN News. Don't worry; I haven't forgotten about the loyal readers at 411. The column will still be around, but there will be fewer reviews from me. It's time to give my metal crown over to guys like Matt and Hags, who know way more about the genre than I do anyway.

This week's edition highlights an album I was initially unsure about discussing. Theoretically, City of Evil did quite well for the band, and Avenged Sevenfold is still around and kicking as of this writing. Even with these facts in front of me, I felt like the album deserved to be analyzed and critiqued; the album sales may not have shown it, but the band's fan base was severely divided when City of Evil came out in 2005. The History

Avenged Sevenfold, or A7X for short, came into fruition in 1999 in Huntington Beach, California. At the time, neither Johnny Christ nor Gates was in the band. Those two would join shortly around the release of Avenged Sevenfold's first album, 2001's Sounding the Seventh Trumpet (Gates only played on the opening instrumental "To End The Rapture," which was on the 2002 re-issue).

("Unholy Confessions" Official Video)

The band toured with little to no help, slowly building a reputation amongst rock and metal fans. 2003's Waking The Fallen would be the first sign that the band had something interesting to give to the general public, with an album that elevated the band's game quite a bit. While they were still engulfed in the metalcore genre, hints of progression were sprouting to the surface, including slower melodies, clean vocals, and a heavier lead guitar presence throughout the album. "Unholy Confessions" was the band's first big single and Waking The Fallen got the band a hardcore following, a group of fans that would be tested with A7X's upcoming album…

The Analysis

With the success of Waking The Fallen, Avenged Sevenfold got the attention of big-time labels. The band signed with Warner Brothers after the release of their sophomore album and released City of Evil two short years later. The band's ditched the screaming vocals and went for a punk/metal hybrid sound that leaned towards the commercial side. "Bat Country" became the breakthrough hit for Avenged Sevenfold, as MTV played the video to death and the mainstream was beginning to wake up and take notice of the five guys from California.

With the increased popularity came disdain from the fan base that had previously supported their through their earlier years as a band. "How could the band go from Waking The Fallen to City of Evil?" was a question a lot of fans asked. The answers ranged from M. Shadows' needing surgery for his throat to the band not wanting to retreat into familiar territory and to let their true artistic vision come into realization.

All these answers could be right, but what about Warner Brothers? I mean, the band signed with a major label, and got all this money and promotion behind them. That doesn't necessarily mean that the band went in a direction the record label wanted them to; not even close. Avenged Sevenfold took the backing of a label and went along with it, crafting an album that matched their true ambitions that couldn't be met under Hopeless Records, their former label.

Extravagant orchestrations, the ever-present acoustic guitars, and even an entire choir are utilized to Avenged Sevenfold's discretion in order to craft an album that is both bombastic and daring. City of Evil is not a perfect album; it pales in comparison to its predecessor for several reasons, which will be outlined in a little bit, and some of the tracks are over-extended to the point of nausea. Nestled deep within the plastic disc containing the 75 minutes of music are moments of sheer genius and artistic splendor that showcases a young band putting both feet on the ground and showing that they could sit at the big boys table along with all the other top-name bands.

( "Bat Country" Live From Live in the LBC & Diamonds in the Rough)

Before I get in-depth with City of Evil, I felt it would be wise to mention the one major discussion point amongst fans about the album: the vocals. On Waking The Fallen, Shadows had a fantastic clean singing voice, as evident on "I Won't See You Tonight (Part 1)." If he would have used that same pitch and tone on City of Evil, there would have been less resistance from long-time fans. Instead, M. Shadows goes for a mix of the nasally-sounding vocals made famous by Axl Rose and a harsh style that reminded me of a young James Hetfield.

On City of Evil, Shadows seems to be unsure about what direction to take his vocals. At times, they are powerful and driving, matching the frantic pace of the music. When the acoustic guitars come out, or a ballad is around the corner, the shortcomings become more apparent. Poignant moments like the emotional ending to "M.I.A" and the extended acoustic outro on "Sidewinder" are ruined by Shadows' ham-fisted vocal performance. His high notes were quite weak, possibly a side-effect of the throat surgery or not enough time spent with a voice coach. The aggressive material is fine, but the melodic moments are sub-par due to Shadows' lackluster singing.

With a loud scream out of Shadows' mouth, "Beast And The Harlot" kicks things off with a bang. A hard-hitting opener with a solid solo after the first chorus, "Beast And The Harlot" was a good decision by the band to start the album with. The first three songs are actually interconnected in the sense that there are no breaks into the tracks, essentially blending one-fourth of the album together. None of the tracks give the listener a chance for a breather, at least until the bass-led breakdown at the end of "Blinded In Chains."

"Bat Country" was the single that got them noticed by the general music public, leading some metal fans to knock the song as nothing more than pop metal. While definitely a track favoring mainstream appeal, there weren't many songs played on MTV that had a minute-long guitar solo that included Gates and Vengeance dueling with each other for the spotlight. Say what you will about MTV and Avenged Sevenfold, but you won't hear a song like "Bat Country" on that channel very often in the future.

The second half of the album was where the real challenge laid for the average Avenged Sevenfold fan. With the ballad "Seize The Day," the band began to expand their horizons and look to add in influences from all over the place. Some of it works well and others seemed forced. The ballad can be placed in the latter category; it sounded like a B-side from Use Your Illusion. M. Shadows does his best Axl and Gates pulls out a solo that just screams "Slash in ‘November Rain.'" I don't mind when a band attempts to pull out a ballad similar to a band, but when you copy the sound directly so much that you can't tell the difference, that can be a problem.

"Betrayed" and "The Wicked End" are also in the mediocre category, both suffering from being too long and having too much cluster in them, especially in the latter's case, with a strings section and choir boggling down the music. While giving off a dark vibe that accentuates the atmosphere, the other band members are seemingly pushed to the side to let the symphonic elements into the proceedings. The former song is dedicated to Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell, who was shot on stage in 2004; a touching tribute, but one that is lacking in the melody and structure to justify its almost seven-minute running length.

("Burn It Down" Live Rock AM Ring 2006)

At points in the second half, the experimentation does work to the band's benefit. "Sidewinder" is a mid-paced monster that builds to a fantastic flamenco conclusion, complete with extended acoustic solos that fight for the ears' attention, and tribal percussion. At over nine minutes, "Strength Of The World" is the longest Avenged Sevenfold song to date, a highly entertaining track that tells the story of a boy who fights to defend his fallen families honor. Complete with an intro straight out of "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly," the song successfully places the listener in the Western-era, sympathizing with the son seeking revenge on those who did his family wrong.

Avenged Sevenfold had a good thing going with Waking The Fallen. A lot happened in the two-year span between their 2nd and 3rd album, and that greatly influenced how City of Evil turned out. The band did well with this new direction, and while most preferred A7X as they were in their early years, Avenged Sevenfold tried something different and for the most part, it was a success. City of Evil was a positive step forward for the band, at least until their self-titled album, but that's a whole other story.

Quick Hits: People's Choice Awards, NAACP Awards, Led Zeppelin, Pearl Jam, Mudvayne, NIN, Burn Halo, Phish
January 8, 2009

Carrie Underwood took home three trophies from last night's People's Choice Awards in Los Angeles, where she won Favorite Female Singer, Best Country Song for "Last Name," and Best Atar Under 35-years-old. Other winners in the music categories included Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" for Best Rock Song, Chris Brown for Male Singer and Katy Perry for Best Pop Song for "I Kissed a Girl." The best R&B Song went to Alicia Keys' "No One," and Hip-Hop Song went to Flo Rida featuring T-Pain, "Low."

In other award show news, Beyoncé Knowles, Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson all came up big as nominees for the 40th NAACP Image Awards, earning nods in both music and film categories. Knowles, Keys and Hudson are competing for Outstanding Female Music Artist and for Best Music Video. They are also nominated for their supporting actress film roles, Keys and Hudson for The Secret Life of Bees and Knowles for Cadillac Records. The NAACP Image Awards will be handed out on February 12 and will air live on Fox.

Despite yesterday's widely circulated quotes from Jimmy Page's manager Peter Mensch, he has now told Music Radar that "Led Zeppelin are over! If you didn't see them in 2007, you missed them. It's done. I can't be any clearer than that." He added, "They tried out a few singers, but no one worked out. That was it. The whole thing is completely over now. There are absolutely no plans for them to continue. Zero. Frankly, I wish everybody would stop talking about it."

Starting next week, Pearl Jam will re-issue the remastered tracks from the impending deluxe edition of their debut album, Ten, through Verizon Wireless and V Cast Music. Starting on January 13 with "Once," a new track from Ten will be available every week. The previously-announced remastered Ten will be out March 24 from Epic Records.

Mudvayne has begun to roll out the tour dates for their trek with Nonpoint and In This Moment. It is scheduled to start on February 3 in Waterloo, IA and confirmed dates run through March 1 in Pittsburgh.

The latest online surprise from Nine Inch Nails is over 400 GB of high quality, uncut footage of the band's recent Lights In The Sky tour. Trent Reznor announced last year that plans had fallen apart to release a DVD of their 2008 acclaimed live show. Fans are now editing and assembling the footage, with plans to release their own concert film online here. In related news, NIN's instrumental album, Ghosts Vol. I-IV, was the best-selling album of 2008 on Amazon's MP3 store.

Former 18 Visions singer James Hart returns with his new band, Burn Halo. Their self titled debut is out March 10, and the lead single, "Dirty Little Girl," features a contribution from Synyster Gates of Avenged Sevenfold. Burn Halo will be on the road with Escape The Fate and Black Tide throughout February, beginning on February 5 in Pomona, CA.

Phish will launch its first summer tour in five years with a two-night stand in Wantagh, NY on June 4 and 5. On Wednesday the band resumed rehearsals, which began in November, in preparation for the upcoming shows. As of now the tour is scheduled to run through June 21 in East Troy, WI, and tickets go on sale to the general public the weekend of January 30 and 31. On March 3, Phish will release The Clifford Ball DVD, featuring their performance from the 1996 festival. The seven-DVD box set will contain more than nine hours of music, a bonus disc with Phish's extended soundcheck, its late night flatbed truck jam and behind-the-scenes footage.
